 ALFRED J. REHWINKEL, age 87, of Kendallville died on Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Lutheran Life Villages in Kendallville. 

Mr. Rehwinkel was born in Merrill, Wisconsin on December 13, 1923 to Henry Rehwinkel and Selma (Rehwinkel) Rehwinkel. 

Al graduated from Merrill High School in 1942.  He went on to honorably serve his country during WWII in England, France, Belgium and Germany in the US Army 256th Division of the Military Police. 

Mr. Rehwinkel married Margaret Reamer on June 15, 1947 at St. John Lutheran Church in Kendallville.  She survives in Kendallville. 

He worked for 40 years as an automobile mechanic.  He started out with the O.E. Coney Pontiac GMC Dealership in Kendallville after making his home with an uncle,  R. J. Rehwinkel.  Al retired in 1985 under Steve West Motors in Kendallville.

Mr. Rehwinkel was an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Kendallville.  He served as the Sunday School superintendent, served on the Board of Christian Education, served on the board of trustees,  attended the St. John Young at heart Bible Study and was an usher for many years. 

Al was a member of the Francis E. Vinyard VFW  #2749 and he and his wife delivered meals on wheels for several years.

Mr. Rehwinkel enjoyed the outdoors and keeping the Baby Mountain farm well kept.  He loved tinkering with machinery and creating simple inventions.  He and his wife also liked to travel.  He was a fan of the Lawrence Welk TV show.

Survivors include:

His wife, Margaret Rehwinkel of Kendallville.
Two daughters, Vickie and Reagan Smith of Kendallville and Kay and Mike Lester of Bellevue, Washington.
One son, Mark and Holly Rehwinkel of Wichita, Kansas.
Five grandchildren, Kyle and Heather Smith of Fort Wayne, Korey and Amanda Smith of Fort Wayne, Andrew Rehwinkel of Arlington, Virginia, and Audrey Rehwinkel of Wichita, Kansas, and Gil Rehwinkel of Nashville, Tennesse
One great granddaughter; Laila of Wichita, Kansas.
Several nieces and nephews
 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son; Alan Rehwinkel of Dallas, Texas, one brother; Raymond Rehwinkel of Merrill, Wisconsin, three sisters; Esther Schulz and Frances Roeder of Merrill, Wisconsin and Hilda Rehwinkel of Kendallville. 

Visitation will be Monday, September 5, 2011 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville. 

Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 11:00 AM at St. John Lutheran Church in Kendallville. 

Officiating the funeral service will be Rev. Paul  B. Griebel. 

Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery in Kendallville. 

Preferred memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church. 

Casketbears wil be Mark Rehwinkel, Gil Rehwinkel, Kyle Smith, Korey Smith, Hal Schuman Jr. and Rick Carmicheal.
