Fiatala Salamo

An amazing man has left this earth.  On Wednesday, April 22, Fiatala Salamo joined his beloved grandmother, Tina Petaia, parents, Fuimaono and Fa’amelea Petaia, his brothers, Taofi and Apiauta and many dear friends and family who left before him.

Fiatala was born in Western Samoa on June 16, 1953. At the age of 21, he came to the United States when a beautiful Peace Corps volunteer won his heart. Fiatala (Tala) was a vibrant member of the Marion community.  He was a deacon at Temple Congregational Church and an insurance agent who was well respected and known to be fair and trustworthy.  Fiatala was also an avid golfer who loved the company of family and friends. Fiatala’s greatest joy has been being a grandfather, and anyone who has spoken to him in recent years will have heard all about his five amazing grandchildren. Perhaps best known for his musical voice, great laugh and huge heart, Fiatala was deeply loved.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 40 years Susan Salamo, daughter Serafina Salamo (Von), son Fiatala Robert Salamo (Rachel), grandchildren Leilanu Jackson, Lautusi Jackson, Laumanuia Jackson, Fiatala Ronald Salamo and Arthur Nafatasi Salamo.  Also surviving are his sisters Manino Salamo, Alofa Qualls, Tuaoitau  Pupi, Sepora Christian, Ole Tominiko and Pele Smith, as well as his brothers, Mualia and Fe’i Salamo and countless beloved friends.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday April 26 at 3 p.m. at Temple Congregational United Church of Christ, 1006 North Western Street in Marion followed by shared memories in the fellowship hall.  His remains will join those of his family members in Samoa.
