HAROLD HECHT, age 96, formerly from Kendallville, passed away on Sunday, October 7, 2007 at the Lutheran Villa Nursing Home in Mulberry, Indiana with his family by his side.

Mr. Hecht was born near Helmer, Indiana on June 30, 1911 to Edwin and Kathrine "Kitty" (Glasgow) Hecht.
He graduated from Salem Center High School in Steuben County where he played basketball and graduated as class valedictorian in 1929.

Harold married Lucille Hilda Hasselman on March 17, 1934 at the Zion Lutheran Church parsonage near Corunna.

He served his country in the United States Army during WWII, trained in tanks at Ft. Knox and won a citation of honor for pulling a fellow soldier from a burning tank. During the war, Harold was a member of the Army 745th Tank Battalion which landed at Omaha Beach and worked its way through the Battle of the Bulge to Czechoslovakia.

Upon his return home from the war, Harold resumed his construction and carpentry occupation throughout northeastern Indiana.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church near Corunna and many times during his life helped to remodel the church.

Survivors include:
Son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Lynn and Ann Hecht of Bruceville, Indiana.

Five grandchildren: Dr. Aaron Hecht of Indianapolis; Andrew Hecht of Lafayette; Dr. Kimberly and Jeff McDonough of Jamestown, Rhode Island; Kristine and Gerald Ripke of Lafayette; Kevin and Julie Ply of Lafayette.
Ten great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce Joan on May 3, 1995 and William Ply; spouse, Lucille Hilda (Hasselman) Hecht on July 23, 2003; one brother, Willard Hecht; and two sisters, Amy Kline and Grace Beaulieu.

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 10, 2007, from 4:00-7:00pm at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, October 11, 2007 at 11:00am at Zion Lutheran Church, near Corunna.
Officiating the funeral service will be Rev. Al Wingfield.
Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery in Kendallville.

Preferred Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.
