HARRY LEE BENECKE, age 88, of New Haven and formerly of Fort Wayne died on Monday, July 20, 2015 at his New Haven home.
Mr. Benecke was born in Fort Wayne on July 20, 1927 to Arnold and Viola (Hanson) Benecke.
He graduated from Central High School in Fort Wayne in 1945.
Mr. Benecke honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952. He served during the Korean War earning a Purple Heart Medal for his bravery.
He married Aldine M. Macke on July 12, 1953 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bingen and she survives in New Haven.
Mr. Benecke retired from International Harvester in Fort Wayne after 37 years of service.
He was a very active member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne where he served as an usher and an elder among many other rolls.
Mr. Benecke loved to play sports, participating in several different sports leagues over the years and winning many different championships and trophies. He enjoyed playing basketball, fast pitch softball, bowling and golf. He still played golf every Wednesday with his friends. He was a member of the Fort Wayne American Legion Post # 47 and New Haven American Legion Post #330.
Survivors include:
His wife; Aldine M. Benecke of New Haven.
Son; Tim and Diane Benecke of Naperville, Illinois.
Daughter; Linda Toirac of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Daughter; Shari Schnurr of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers; Arnold Benecke and Jim Benecke.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 23, 2015 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 7710 East State Boulevard in Fort Wayne. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 24, 2015 at 11:00 AM at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne.
Officiating the funeral service will be Pastor David Schultz.
Burial will be at St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Preferred memorials may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church or Worship for Shut-ins, 5 Martin Luther Drive, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46825.
