Robert Schmidt

March 2, 1923 ~ September 17, 2017 (age 94) 94 Years Old


Robert Henry Schmidt, age 94, of Kendallville, died Sunday, September 17, 2017 at Lutheran Life Villages in Kendallville.  Mr. Schmidt was born March 2, 1923 in Kendallville, Indiana to the late Henry and Rose (Pfefferkorn) Schmidt.  He graduated from Kendallville High School in 1941.  He entered into the United States Army Air Force in 1943 and served his country in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during WWII.  He was a Technical Sergeant aerial gunner with the Squadron H 1504th Army Air Force unit and flew 31 missions over Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland. He married Beverly J. Clark on September 10, 1949 in Garrett, Indiana and she preceded him in death on September 23, 1989.  Bob was employed as a meter electrician for 38 years with the Kendallville Light Plant, which is now Indiana & Michigan Electric Company before retiring in 1987.   He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Kendallville Moose Lodge, Albion Eagles, and the American Legion Post 86.

Survivors include:
Son, John Schmidt of Largo, Florida.
Grandson, Matt Schmidt of Albion.
Grandson, Tony Schmidt of Albion. 
Two great granddaughters, Sydney and Lauren.
Close companion for many years, Beverly Ream of Kendallville.
He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Schmidt in 2003; three sisters, Mildred Blust, Margaret Neal and Irene Fryhover; and one brother, Paul Schmidt. 

Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 20, 2017 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville with a vigil service at 4:00 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 10:00 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kendallville with Fr. James Stoyle officiating. 
Burial with military honors will take place at Embry Cemetery near Garrett.
