Wilma Jean (Hambrock) Kumfer, 90, died Thursday, February 1, 2024, at 2:20pm, at Millers at Oak Pointe in Columbia City, Indiana. Born on October 10, 1933 in Fort Wayne, daughter of Clarence and Florence (Crawford) Hambrock, she was a 1951 graduate of South Side High School in Fort Wayne. A music lover, she performed on the radio with the Dump Rascals, Joe Taylor and the Redbirds, and other groups. She was first employed at General Electric, where she met and then married Charles Kumfer in 1955 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fort Wayne. She enjoyed a long career in banking, employed at nearly every major bank in Fort Wayne, retiring in 2014. She was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Columbia City. Born and raised in Fort Wayne, she has been a resident of Whitley County since 1965.
She is survived by son, Larry (Terrie) Kumfer of Fort Wayne; son Gil (Lisa Sweet) Kumfer; son Jeff (Tammy) Kumfer; daughter Vicki (Rick) Schrader; son Andy (Sue) Kumfer; all of Columbia City; daughter Gemma (Wesley) Funsch of Perry, Georgia; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her birth parents; stepmothers Louise and Helen; brothers Frederick, Wayne, Harold, Clarence, and Carl; and sisters Betty and Dorothy; and infant son, Jamie Joseph Kumfer.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10am Friday, February 9, 2024 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, Nix Settlement, 9989 IN-9, Columbia City, with Fr. Dale Bauman presiding. Visitation is from 8:30-10am before the mass. Private burial in St. Catherine’s Cemetery shall occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mrs. Kumfer’s memory are suggested to St. Joseph Indian School, South Dakota, and masses at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church. Envelopes will be available at the church.
