Edward Gleason Dooley, age 92, of Big Turkey Lake near Stroh, Indiana died Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Presence Sacred Heart Home in Avilla.  He was born June 6, 1924 in Hartford, Connecticut to Joseph and Anna (Hickey) Dooley.  He was married on February 4, 1954 to Agnes B. Murphy.  She preceded him in death on March 27, 1977. He also married Dawn Pratt on June 5, 1982. She proceeded him in death on November 28, 2001.  He graduated from William Buckley High School in Hartford in 1942.  After high school, he was drafted into the Army Air Corp where he served in the China-India-Burma Theatre with the 24th Combat Mapping Squadron (10th Air Force) flying aerial mapping missions. He graduated from Michigan State University in 1950 on the GI Bill and was later recalled by the Army for the Korean War.  He served as a 2nd lieutenant in the Japan Logistical Command in Kokoro, Japan.  He served as a historical writer assigned to record the official history of the Korean War.  While in this capacity, he had articles published in Stars and Stripes as well as other periodicals.  After the war, he joined the advertising department of the Hartford Courant in 1952.  He served originally on the retail advertising staff as a salesman and later on the national advertising staff.  He was appointed advertising director of the Sarasota News in Florida in 1958.  In 1960, he joined the national advertising staff of the Miami Herald in Florida.  A year later, he was appointed manager of the Broward County bureaus of the Herald with offices in Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood and Pompano Beach.  In 1962, he was promoted to general manager of the Miami Beach Sun newspaper, a subsidiary of the Miami Herald.  In 1964, he was named the advertising director of the Tallahassee Democrat.  In 1966, he was named advertising director of the South Bend Tribune in Indiana, holding that title until 1980 when he retired.  While living in South Bend, he served in numerous community endeavors including board membership of Junior Achievement, Better Business Bureau and the Michigan Business School.  He was a member of the Michiana Advertising Club and the Michiana Marketing Club. An avid golfer, he was member of Morris Park Country Club.  Dooley also served in a number of capacities in various newspaper advertising associations.  In 1969, he was president of the Indiana Advertising Executives Association.  As member of the International Advertising Executives Association, Dooley was chairman of the Schools and Colleges Committee.  He served as the liaison between the INAEA and the Association on Education for Journalism.  In that role he was assigned to various teams that visited universities to evaluate their journalism programs for accreditation.  Also during that time, he was one of the principal founding architects of the Irish Youth Hockey League.  He later became a successful coach in the league winning several championships with his son’s teams.  He later applied these same talents in the development of the Indiana High School Hockey league in Northern Indiana.  In 1981, he purchased and became owner of Tri-County Publishing Company in Churubusco, Indiana which published the Tri-County Truth, Avilla News, and Northwest Allen County Newspapers.  He retired to Big Turkey Lake near Stroh, Indiana in 1989.  He was a lifelong golfer, avid reader, wonderful cook and member of the Orland American Legion Post 423.

Survivors include:
Son, Philip G. (Mary) Dooley of Auburn, Indiana.
Son, Edward T. “Ned” (Nancy) Dooley of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Four stepsons; William (Eneke) Pratt, Timothy (Marcia) Pratt, Douglas (Anita) Pratt and Jeffrey Pratt all of Elkhart, Indiana. 
Six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, six nephews and nieces.  
In addition to his parents and wives, two brothers, William T. and Ernest F. preceded him in death. 

Visitation will be Monday, April 17, 2017 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville.
Funeral services with military honors will be held Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Hite Funeral Home with Tom Novy officiating.
Burial will take place at Highland Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana.
Memorial donations may be made to the Orland American Legion Post 423.
