LARRY MAYERS, age 76, of Big Long Lake, died on Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at Parkview Noble Hospital, Kendallville, Indiana following a long illness.  He was born December 19, 1936 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the son of Lawrence J. “Bud” Mayers and Irene Klepper Mayers. He attended St. Jude School and graduated from Central Catholic High School in Fort Wayne. He married Janeen Powell in 1957 and served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. After working for Fortmeyer’s Tire Center in Fort Wayne for 40 years, he and Janeen moved to Big Long Lake in 1992. He retired in 2001 from Shrader Tire and Oil in Fremont and then served on the LaGrange County Lakes Council, Woods-Lands-Lakes Council, the Big Long Lake Association.  He was also on the LaGrange County Taxation Land Assessment Board.  In 2004, he ran for office on the LaGrange County Council.  He was a member of St. Gaspar Catholic Church in Rome City.

Survivors include:
His wife of 56 years, Janeen Mayers of Big Long Lake.
Daughter, Laurie Mayers and her husband, Joseph White of Plymouth, Michigan.
Daughter, Karen and Paul Kortesoja of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Son, Larry and Margaret Mayers of Fort Wayne.
Son, Mark and Lori Mayers of Fort Wayne.
Daughter, Susan and Jamie Ashton of Fishers, Indiana.
Son, David and April Mayers of Beaverton, Oregon.
Daughter, Julie and Jeff LeGassick of Portland, Oregon.
17 grandchildren: Sam Mayers White and Annie White; Andrew and Ellen Kortesoja; Elizabeth and Madeline Mayers, Emily Frease; Matthew, Kayla, Emma Mayers, Meghan Kohler; Zachary, Caroline, and Sam Ashton; Nik Lund; Ivy, Sadie, and Stella LeGassick.
Sister, Janet and Jerry Schoenle of Witmer Lake.
Sister, Sally and Gene Rebert of Marysville, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Zirkle of Fort Wayne, and his brother, Thomas Mayers of Greensboro, Ga. He was the son of the late Lawrence J. “Bud” and Irene Klepper Mayers of Orland.

Visitation will be Friday, August 16, 2013 from 4:00-8:00pm at Hite Funeral Home, 403 South Main Street in Kendallville. There will be a Rosary service at 7:45pm.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 11:00am at St. Gaspar Del Bufalo Catholic Church on State Road 9 near Rome City. There will be visitation at 10:00am before the service at the church. Officiating the funeral mass will be Fr. Bernard Ramenaden.
Burial will be at St. Gaspar Catholic Cemetery.
Preferred memorials may be made to St. Gaspar's Catholic Church or Children's Heart Foundation, Oregon Chapter.
