Cindy Bevington Olmstead Obituary

Cynthia Ann (Langley) Bevington Olmstead, age 73, passed away peacefully March 21, 2024, surrounded by family.

She was born in Sturgis, Michigan, on June 22, 1950 to the late Fred Haynes Langley and Carol Jean (Nichols) Langley Starrett. She graduated from North Side High School (Fort Wayne, Indiana) in 1968, having earned a letter in journalism. She spent her early adult years devoted to family and her community, making great strides for children and education in the small Florida town where she and her first husband, Charles Bevington, raised their two children, Heidi and Scott.

Cindy married William (“Bill”) James Olmstead on November 25, 2006 in Angola, Indiana, and enjoyed a life of outdoor activities, special fundraising for an orphanage, and good times at the Moose family lodge. She lived a valiant, meaningful life, having overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and choosing to use her talents in ways that benefited others, mainly through her writing. She won more state-level first-, second-, and third-place awards than any journalist in history in both Florida and Indiana; she won several national awards including two Inland Press awards; and she was once a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in journalism. Many of her articles influenced waves of change for both her individual readers and the greater community, including in-depth coverage on domestic violence, suicide, and medical justice.

Right up to her final week, she was encouraging others, handling her business, and displaying the strength that's carried her through the darkest and most trying times of her life. She was an overcomer, having put her faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and wanting everyone to know that He is the way, the truth, and the life. Her courage, dynamism, and determination were only surpassed by her love for others, including forgiveness of those who had hurt her. Her friends and family meant everything to her, and she took delight in doing kind things for them, especially those in need of a helping hand or a kind word.

She is survived by her husband Bill Olmstead; daughter Heidi (Kevin) Saliba; son Scott (Maranda) Bevington; grandchildren Holly Saliba, Jordan Bevington, and Gavyn Bevington; great-granddaughter Anastasia Holtz; brothers Michael (Robin) Langley, John Langley, and Ken Langley; and sister Diana (Jim) Grimes. Her brother Steve Langley passed away in 2019.

Cindy's memorial will be held Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 3:00 pm at the Fremont Moose Lodge, located at 1665 East State Road 120, Fremont, Indiana.
