Gloria Patricia Spidel, age 90, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away at her home in Amarillo. Mrs. Spidel was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on November 13, 1933, to the late Harry Baldwin and Pauline Dora (Mielke) Baldwin. Gloria grew up during those difficult years of the early and mid-20th century. Like most people of that generation, she knew the meaning of hard work and determination and she was a person of great ambition to achieve the simple things in life, a home and family and to hopefully not have to work long hours in factory and while worrying about the banker foreclosing on the house.
After high school she married the love of her life, Charles Spidel and quickly began a family. They were married on May 24, 1952, in LaGrange, Indiana and were happily married for 59 years. He preceded her in death on October 13, 2010. Shortly after their marriage they began a life on the farm, then work led them to Kendallville, Terre Haute and Largo Florida.
The last 23 years were spent in Amarillo Texas where her son was a Sr. Pastor and could care for them in their final years. The majority of her life centered around three things: family, serving the church and singing. She had a great passion to support missionaries and to help with ministries that served the poor and those who were often overlooked. She made friends wherever she went and will be remembered for her outgoing personality, humor, her loud laugh and her desire to always be busy doing something. She is preceded in death by her son Dwight and her husband in 2010.
She is survived by her sons, Bruce and Twila Spidel of Terre Haute; Keith and Pam Spidel of Safety Harbor, Florida; and Kurtis and Dana of Amarillo, Texas. 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville, Indiana with visitation at 10:00 AM.
Burial will follow at Woodruff Cemetery in LaGrange County next to her husband. Memorial gifts or donations will be received by Wayne Center Methodist Church.
