Hazel Jean Mapes, age 65, of Kendallville, passed away Monday, October 16, 2023 at Parkview Randaillia Hospital, Fort Wayne. Hazel was born April 16, 1958 in Perry County, Kentucky to the late Garrett and Martha (Messer) Ledford. She married Dennis R. Mapes on March 14, 1981. He preceded her in death on May 13, 2019. Hazel retired from Trinity Church United Methodist in Kendallville as the secretary for almost 40 years. She enjoyed writing, listening to and reading books. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Daughter, Andrea (Derek Fuller) Mapes of Kendallville.
Daughter, Kristina Mapes of Kendallville.
Son, Daniel (Morgan Potter) Mapes of Kendallville.
Daughter, Rebecca (James Love) Handshoe of Kendallville.
Son, Douglas (Shay) Mapes of Kendallville.
Daughter, Melinda Mapes of Kendallville.
Son, Dustin (Alissa) Mapes of Fishers.
13 grandchildren.
Sister, Rita (Frank) Walkup of Kendallville.
Brother, Jerry (Ronda) Ledford of Kendallville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dennis; granddaughter, Haleigh Combs; and a brother, Gary Lyn Ledford.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 19, 2023 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 20, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Hite Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Mosley officiating.
Burial will follow at Lake View Cemetery.
