Dear Mandy, Nic and Family
I can't help but feel sadness in my heart for you and your family during this fragile time. But to think of your Grandma Teenie I can't help but smile. She was always smiling and happy. And she had such a giving spirit. When she first moved to the manor I gave her a crochet hook and yarn. As soon as she made something with that yarn, she brought it across the hallway and gave it to my Mom. :) And she was always trying to talk Gertie into going out dancing. At the time Gertie was 99 or 100. And the time she talked Mom into cutting off her ankle bracelet because it bothered her when she laid down to take a nap. Oh my, the shenanigans those 2 got into in the nursing home. Then there was the time I took our husky Smokey over to visit. Smokey scratched Teenies arm. Of course, Betty being Betty , she cleaned her arm and but a bandaid on it.:) Well both of them had some explaining to do about the unaccounted bandaid. I don't think the anklet was ever found, I know it wasn't in the waste basket. So once your sorrow isn't as fresh, remember the good times, and the silly things. Our lives have crossed paths at different times over the years. Our deepest sympathy, Prayers and hugs are sent your way, Carolyn and Denzil

Carol (Teenie) Ross died in hospice care on Monday, January 16 at the Kendallville Manor Nursing home where she had resided since October 2012. Teenie was born in Valentine, Indiana (LaGrange County) to Wilbur and Zoah Ross. On March 14, 1942, Teenie married Walter Jay Wirick. He preceded her in death, June 21, 1969. In Wisconsin, on July 10, 1973 she married a second time to Carl George Knafel, who also preceded her in death, September 6, 2009.

Teenie and Walt had three children, Jackie J., Philip Gale and Evalyn Zoah Fortman. Philip and Evalyn preceded Teenie in death. Jack survives with his wife, Linda, in Syracuse, Indiana. Teenie had three step-children with Carl, Terry Knafel and Connie (Knafel) Strater, who survive, and Karen (Knafel) Holsinger, who preceded Teenie in death. She had three sisters and two brothers: Mary Elizabeth Becker, Juanita Warner, James Jay Ross, Jack Wilbur Ross, all who preceded her in death and Donabelle Cecelia Myers, Kendallville, who survives.

In addition to her son, sister and step-children, Teenie is survived by eight grandchildren through her marriage with Walt, and four great-grandchildren. Through her marriage to Carl she is survived by her step-daughter and step-son, fourteen step-grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Teenie was a skilled homemaker and industry worker. During World War II she worked in Fort Wayne, Indiana at the General Electric facility. She retired from work at the Holabird Manufacturing, a furniture company in Kendallville, after a disabling shoulder injury in the early 1970s. She continued working hard at home and in service to others. She became the primary caregiver for her parents until the year before their passing in the mid-1980s. Teenie never passed an opportunity to help others through giving of her time and talents.

She was both thrifty and gifted with creativity. Teenie could refurbish and re-upholster furniture, create beautiful quilts and afghans and taught herself to make dolls during the early 1980s Cabbage Patch Doll craze. She taught anyone interested how to sew, embroider or crochet. She collected and shared recipes. Her real passion was people.

Teenie loved music and dancing and whenever a good song came on she was ready to tap her toes or get up and dance. Teenie was a life-long writer of letters to family and friends. She always took time to keep in touch with people, whether in person, on the phone or by a card or letter in the mail. She kept most letters she received. Those letters she sent often had a clipping from the news, a photo or a recipe tucked inside for the recipient.

Following the death of her second husband, Teenie asked family to hold no visitation and only private, graveside services at her passing. She believed firmly that the experience was too taxing, and her immediate family agreed to honor her wishes. In lieu of flowers, please consider giving a donation in her memory to the American Heart Association. Teenie survived a massive stroke in June 2010, and while in care for that event, learned that her heart was beating irregularly. The American Heart Association helps to educate the public about risks related to these and other cardiovascular diseases. Burial will be at the Wolf Lake Cemetery, Noble County, Indiana.
