Hello Buckner family and friends,

I was very saddened to learn of Lowell's passing. I first met him in 1965 when his family and mine were both living in a mobile home park in Elgin, Illinois. Steve was my age and we played together. In 1968, after my family spent three years in Houston, we moved in across the street from the Buckners on Crabtree Road in East Dundee, Illinois. This was where I got to know the family a lot better. My family left East Dundee in 1975 but we kept in touch.

In 1983 I moved to San Francisco to go to school. Having Lowell, both Steves, John, and other family members around was wonderful - like having a built-in family since mine was back in the Midwest and Texas. I have many fond memories of watching the great 1980s 49er teams, watching the Blue Angels during Fleet Week, going down to the beach, and many other activities.

I left the Bay Area in 1989 but returned in August 2001. Lowell's house on Hoffman was like my "home away from home." I remember driving up there on September 11th because I didn't know where else to go so we sat and watched the news together. Recently, I had not seen him for a few years and I deeply regret not seeing him during his last visit to the Bay Area last fall.

Lowell was, quite simply, one of the kindest, warmest people I have ever met. He will be greatly missed.

Lowell was a man that I looked up to as a little girl growing up in rural Indiana. When he came to visit I loved to just listen to him talk. He made me realize there was so much more to life outside the corn rows. Much love to you, Lowell and your entire family. I admired each and everyone of them.

To the Buckner family: Lowell's mother Elsa was my teacher at Ligonier and I just loved her. I am sure Lowell was a wonderful person to be raised by such lovely parents. I am sorry for your loss.
