Betty Jean (Brown) Newell

BETTY JEAN NEWELL, age 93, formerly of Fort Wayne and recently of Kendallville, died on Monday, June 22, 2015 at Lutheran Life Villages where she resided since October 2014. Mrs. Newell was born in Warsaw, Indiana on October 8, 1921 to the late Ralph and Mary (Atchinson) Brown.  She graduated from Burkett High School, near Columbia City in 1939. She earned an associate degree from Evanston Collegiate Institute in Evanston, Illinois in 1942, a Bachelor of Education degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1944 and obtained her Master of Education degree from Northwestern University in 1955.  She married Bert Thomas Newell on June 15, 1954 in Angola and he preceded her in death on January 11, 2014.  Betty was an elementary education teacher at Coesse and Fort Wayne Community Schools for more than 30 years before retiring in 1986.  She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, summertime at their McClish Lake cottage, and playing bingo.

Survivors include: 
Son, Daniel and Lori Newell of Lake of the Woods near Hudson.
Son, Michael and Amber Newell of Kendallville.
Three grandchildren: Jessica and Chris Stewart of Auburn; Jonathan Newell of Kendallville; and Grace Newell of Lake of the Woods.  Five great grandchildren: Ivan and Lucas Jacobs, Christopher Stewart, Brayden and Nathaniel Newell.
Sister, Alice Hughes of Wilmington, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lorrie Lynn Newell, who died at five days old on October 29, 1958.
She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Hazel Brown, Richard Brown, Albert Brown, Emma Jean Brown, Donald Brown, James Brown, Helen Grubb, Roger Brown, Shirley Brudi, Norman Brown, Jerry Brown.
 

Visitation will be Thursday, June 25, 2015 from 3:00-6:00pm at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 26, 2015 at 11:00am at Hite Funeral Home.

Officiating the funeral service will be Vicar Robert Hopkins.

Burial will be at Swan Cemetery near LaOtto.
